Turin, Lingotto Fiere, AutoMotoRetrĂ². Finally I’ve had a good chance to take some confidence with the new normal zoom made by Sony.
As it was easy to imagine, the new 24-70 GM is actually the new reference point among many zoom lenses (together with the 70-200 f/2.8 GM).
In respect to the Sony Zeiss 24-70 f4 it can be defined less incisive but in any case more “fine” and soft; it’s got a totally different rendition. Resolution and sharpness wise it is one of the best zoom lenses I’ve ever shot with. Even being highly resolute it never appears too much marked and the realism is decisively impressive. Bokeh shows a remarkable quality and as we’ll see later there are conditions more favourable than this to test this aspect properly.About the practical use it feels lighter than it could be expected from such a high level glass and it is perfectly balanced with the camera (Sony A7RmkII) and its paired battery grip. Even if it takes advantage of the IBIS, the achiavable shutter times are very permissive in low light.
***The Alfa Romeo 4C headlight’s detail shows glass’ transparency realism with a good amount of detail below. In the Ohlins suspensions’ shot (@ f3.2 and 500ISO) the dust grains are well distinguishable; the writing is also perfectly sharp***
***This two images are useful to appreciate three-dimensionality and realism. Bokeh is consistent and well defined. In the presence of many strong artificial lights with different tonalities, it turns up to see some strange effects over the refletting metallic parts in the out of focus area, but it’s completely normal*** ***The blue wheel’s detail (@ 70mm, f/2.8 and 1000ISO) is spectacular. Wide open it works very well even close to the edge of the lens: “extra-sharp tiny-hair at f/2.8” lovers would be well satisfied! I wanted to add also the Chevrolet engine shot to underline that this lens doesn’t lose its plastic look neither with non incidence and low light***
