The Sony 70-200 f4 G is the tele zoom lens presented during 2014 that completes the normal aperture zoom trio of the FE system; it’s part of the most used focal lengths range together with the 16-35 f4 ZA and the 24-70 f4 ZA.
Being quite compact and light, it joins perfectly the A7 series camera bodies and it feels well-balanced when shooting with a battery grip.
For the optical quality it places itself at an excellent level never showing evident limits even when dealing with A7RmkII’s 42Mpx. Without a doubt it’s a must-have lens in your own legacy. The constant aperture of f4 is widely suitable to allow shooting in the most different conditions and it really never comes to be a practical limit (I hardly open more than f5 or f5.6 ‘cause I often look for a bit of depth of field).
Images’ realism and consistency are quite impressive to be “just a zoom”. Bokeh is clean and homogeneous; using the proper apertures, the detachment between subject and background is neat and well-defined.
***The candle’s enlargement gives an idea of the realism achievable even with difficult surfaces like those lucid and not exactly solid; the tiny flame is so sharp and sculpted even at that distance. Observing the second image, in the candle holder’s enlargement a spider web is clearly visible; fine detail is very remarkable. Similarly, the tiniest scratches on its surface are perfectly noticeable. That light bump onto the metal has been stood without causing any kind problem***

Autofocus always conducts its duty properly, fast and precise just enough to never disappoint. Manual focusing ring (as well as zoom ring) moves easily even with only two finger: feeling of use is perfect. The focal range makes it suitable for whatever photographic genre: that it concern reportage, sport, events, portraiture, details, landscaping, the 70-200 G is one of those lenses to always bring with you and, not a case, it integrates perfectly with the 24-70 f4 ZA in your Sony legacy.
Therefor, we’ve got again another spot-on lens for the FE system. Respectable performances, compact size, price in line with its reference environment and possibility of use at 360°.
